Gym: Let's Do This Fitness- Livonia, Mi
Type of workout: Cardio Drumming
Trainer: Dorothy
This was my very first group cardio workout. I was invited by my special friend Andrea to join the group. If you read the "hairnet" blog you might remember that wonderful respiratory therapist that found an ECMO bed for Jed. That's Andrea!! I'm blessed to call her friend now. Let's Do This Firness is run by Dorothy . The class is held in a small gym in Livonia with drumming classes held Mondays at 6:45. Drop in rates are an affordable $10! All equipment is provided. Just come ready to have a good time. Dorothy has an infectious energy that made me feel comfortable from the moment I arrived. The other ladies were very friendly and welcoming. For me, good music is a huge part if enjoying my workouts and Dorothy had me covered. Her playlist was flat out fun and has something for everyone. This is definitely a beginner friendly workout and a great option for someone with limitations. Grab a friend and go get your bang on!

Gym: Orange Theory- Howell, MI
Type of workout: Full-body heart rate zone and strength training
Trainer: Deidra
I wasn't certain what to expect on my first Orange Theory visit. I had done some research prior to arriving and had a good understanding of the format before I came. Orangetheory is based on the five heart rate training zones. Unlike high-intensity interval training (HIIT), you adjust your level of effort during the workout based on what your heart is telling you. The workout was comprised of 3 parts: rowing, strength training, and treadmill. Deidra was my instructor and folks, she was great!! Her positive energy kept the class pushing and able to meet their goals for the day. I regularly lift weights so I had no issues with the strength training. The rowing got my heart up quickly, but it was the treadmill that pushed me into the splat zone and kept my heart rate up. Deidra was there to motivate us to push through. The facility itself was very nice and the music was great, but my favorite part was all the other classmates. There were words of encouragement and smiles throught out the whole class. The instructors are able to make accomodations for anyone with limitations while still helping them to have a top-notch workout. If you'd like to try it for yourself new members 1st visits are free. I know that I myself will be back soon.

Event: Night Nation Run
Type of workout: 5K Run/Walk
Location: Detroit, MI
The Night Nation Run lived up to its hype of being the ultimate blend of a Music Festival and Fun Run. It was a music filled course equipped with Live DJs spinning club worthy jams and a killer Light Show. Cue the glow in the dark beach balls bouncing through the air to complete the ultimate street party! The location was a huge bonus for me because I am a mega baseball lover and Comerica Park is one of my absolute favorite places. Upon arrivel there was a DJ to get us all amped as we waited to get checked in a ready to run. First time I ever had liquor offered at a run/workout event! It was a scorcher and the frozen mixed drink was calling my name. My excitement was a little deflated once we were about 10 minutes into the course. I ran with a group of friends and we were in the 5th wave to go out and as we made it to the top of the concourse we started running into the first wave runners and we instantly on top of each other. We saw two people fall and one girl actually face planted on the concrete. Luckily she seemed to be ok, just a little shaken. There were multiple spots with music along the course which was great, but they weren't as loud as I had anticipated. What was lacking there the finish line made up for. It crossed into an Epic Main Stage After Party featuring Top Headliner DJs. The picture attached is from the after party. The music was great and the atmosphere was electric. All in all it was a super fun event. This event is not for the serious runner, I heard many seasoned veterans complaining that no one was taking it seriously. I think it is definitley important to align your expectations accordingly. Most of the people attending were there for a good time. If I could give the Detroit crew a suggestion for next year, have designated sides for runners and walkers. That might help reduce unnecessary injuries. If you're a novice runner or walker- you should put this on your bucket list. This is a 5K that will defintley get your booty shaking!!
